Tuition Areas

11+ and Common Entrance Exam Preparation

Selective schools require prospective students to sit tests in Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and (in some areas) Non-Verbal Reasoning.

Neither Verbal Reasoning or Non-Verbal Reasoning are taught in the National Curriculum. I can help students prepare for the Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning elements they will encounter in the tests.

On top of this, the Maths and English skills required to pass the tests are often above the level to which they have been taught. I can develop the skills required in these areas to pass the tests.

Catch Up and Accelerated Progress

Everyone learns different things at different paces. Some children need more time to process topics and acquire certain skills, while others excel when challenged and are given the opportunity to further their learning.

I can help fill in the gaps for those students requiring catch up lessons and give opportunities to children who want a challenge.

Functional Skills

The City & Guilds Functional Skills in English and Maths aim to give young people and adults the tools needed to develop and demonstrate the practical skills in real life.

A Functional Skills qualification in English and Maths is needed to demonstrate competence in these subjects when a pass at GCSE has not been obtained. This is a requirement to graduate from an apprenticeship.

Fundamental Maths and English Skills for Teachers

Further details about these will be available following a restructure of teacher training by the government.

The Fundamental Skills in English and Maths are replacing the Teacher Key Skill Test which assessed competence in English and Maths. I can help aspiring teachers to attain this standard.

Learning Approach

Online and In Person Lessons

Lessons are predominantly skill based, focusing on a topic that has been identified at school or through previous lessons where the student needs further support.

Lessons consist of taught element, a supported practice element and an independent element. At the end of the lesson I provide feedback on previous homework.

Lessons are tailored to suit each individual student's needs.

Mock Exams

To prepare students for upcoming exams I replicate a test environment that is as realistic as possible. Exams are time constrained, follow all exam conditions and I act as an invigilator.

Exams are marked immediately and I provide detailed feedback, including recommendations for future practice.

Ability Assessment

Ability assessments are primarily aimed at identifying if a student is capable of passing the 11+.

Students are assessed in English, Maths and Verbal Reasoning during a 2 hour assessment. Afterwards, I will discuss the results during a consultation with the parents and make recommendations based on the student's ability.
